FosterFolk privacy notice
Last updated: 14 October 2026.
The short version
FosterFolk is a website about fostering. It is a brand of BrightMaker Labs Ltd.
FosterFolk is not a fostering agency. It does not approve foster carers. It does not place children.
We only ask for information when we give you something back. For example, we ask for your postcode so we can show you local pay.
We ask for no more than 2 things on each visit.
You can see everything we hold about you. You can change it, download it or delete it, in one place.
We never sell your information. We never give a list of our members to anyone, including local authorities and advertisers.
If you say yes, local authorities near you can send you messages through FosterFolk. They never see your name or your email address unless you choose to contact them.
Ask Hazel is our AI assistant. We save Ask Hazel chats. If you are signed in, we link your chats to your account, so you can see your history and delete it. If you are not signed in, we save your chats without an account. We remove names, phone numbers and email addresses when we save a chat. No AI model learns from your chats.
We advertise FosterFolk on other websites. We tell an advertising platform that you signed up only if you say yes.
FosterFolk is for adults. You must be 18 or over to make an account.
You can complain to us. You can also complain to the ICO, the UK data protection regulator.
The rest of this page gives the detail.
Who we are
FosterFolk is a brand of BrightMaker Labs Ltd. BrightMaker Labs Ltd runs FosterFolk at fosterfolk.com. It decides how and why FosterFolk uses your personal information. In data protection law, that makes BrightMaker Labs Ltd the controller.
BrightMaker Labs Ltd is a private limited company registered in England and Wales.
Company number: 17489442.
Registered office: 2nd Floor College House, 17 King Edwards Road, Ruislip, London, United Kingdom, HA4 7AE.
ICO registration number: ZC273922.
BrightMaker Labs also runs FosterScope. FosterScope is a separate service for local authority fostering services. We explain how the 2 services stay apart in “FosterScope and local authorities” below.
How to contact us
Email us at hello@fosterfolk.com. Write to us at BrightMaker Labs Ltd, 2nd Floor College House, 17 King Edwards Road, Ruislip, London, United Kingdom, HA4 7AE.
What FosterFolk is, and what it is not
FosterFolk gives information about fostering in the UK. It shows what local authorities pay foster carers. It helps you find the right local authority. Later it will offer a community for foster carers.
FosterFolk is not a fostering agency. It does not approve foster carers. It does not place children.
FosterFolk charges nobody. Members pay nothing. Local authorities pay FosterFolk nothing.
Some local authorities pay BrightMaker Labs for FosterScope. Through FosterScope, they can post news on their own FosterFolk page and show messages to FosterFolk readers. Every one is labelled as coming from that local authority. See “FosterScope and local authorities” below.
What we collect, and when
We build your profile a little at a time. Each time, we ask for 1 or 2 things. We always tell you what you get in return. You can say no to any question and still use the site.
| Level | What we ask for | When we ask | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Email address, first name | When you sign up for launch news or the weekly email, or save a page | Updates, saved pages |
| 2 | Postcode, and the local authority it is in. We keep the full postcode if you give it, or the postcode district (for example LS6) if that is all you give. Also your stage, for example “thinking about it” or “fostering” | When you use the pay lookup or the eligibility checker | Local pay, local guides, nearby local authorities |
| 3 | Household: single or couple, own children at home, spare room, working pattern, age band | When you use the eligibility checker or “How long will it take?” | General answers to “could I foster?” that fit your household |
| 4 | Interests: types of fostering, ages of children you are interested in, topics you follow | When you follow a topic | A personal home page and email |
| 5 | Mobile number, display name, short bio, profile picture | When you ask for text alerts or make your first post | Posting, text alerts |
| 6 | Whether you foster, years fostering, specialisms, your fostering service | When you ask to become a verified foster carer | The verified badge and what it opens up |
| 7 | Interest in mentor and ambassador roles, your availability | On your profile, or for community roles | Roles and recognition |
Level 3 asks about your household. That includes whether you have children of your own living at home. This is information about your household. We never ask for a child’s name.
The eligibility checker gives general answers only. It does not assess you or decide anything about you. It does not store your answers to questions about health or disability.
A full postcode can point to a single street or a few homes. You can give only the first part of your postcode, called the postcode district, if you prefer. Then we store only that.
Accounts start later. We will tell you before they do. When accounts start, you can turn your profile into an account. You set a password or use an email sign-in link.
What we record about how you use FosterFolk
If you agree to analytics and personalisation, we also record some activity against your profile:
- the pages you read and the topics you follow;
- the topics of your Ask Hazel questions, but not the chats themselves;
- the tools you use, such as the pay lookup.
We use this to show you more useful pages and emails. If you agree to hear from local authorities, we also use your area and interests to decide which messages reach you. See “Messages from local authorities near you”.
If you say yes to email tracking, we also record which marketing emails you open and which links you click. See “Emails and texts from FosterFolk”.
Things we never collect in your profile
We never store these in your profile:
- criminal records;
- immigration status;
- any information about a child in care.
People often ask about these subjects. Ask Hazel and our guides answer the question. Your profile does not keep the answer.
Information about your background
Some people want to ask about their background. For example: “Can I foster if I am in a same-sex relationship?” or “Can I foster with a health condition?”
The law gives extra protection to information about:
- ethnicity;
- religion;
- health and disability;
- sexual orientation.
The law calls this special category data.
You may choose to add this to your profile. It is always optional. We never ask for it before you choose. We ask for your explicit consent first, separately from everything else. We never guess it from what you read or what you ask Ask Hazel.
We never use it to choose who receives a local authority’s message. We never use it to choose who sees an advert or a local authority’s placement on FosterFolk.
We do not share this information in any form today. That includes our heat maps. You can remove it at any time from your preference centre.
Ask Hazel
Ask Hazel opens to the public later. We will update this notice if anything here changes before it does.
Ask Hazel is an AI assistant on FosterFolk. Ask Hazel answers questions about fostering only. Ask Hazel answers only from FosterFolk pages and a list of trusted sources, such as gov.uk.
Ask Hazel is not a social worker. Ask Hazel is not a fostering service.
What happens to your messages
We send your message to our AI model provider, Anthropic, so Ask Hazel can write an answer.
We save every chat. When we save a chat, we remove names, phone numbers and email addresses.
If you are signed in, we link your chats to your account. You can see your Ask Hazel history and delete any chat, or all of them, in your preference centre.
If you are not signed in, we save your chats without an account. We use them to check the quality of answers.
We keep the question text to find questions that our pages do not yet answer.
No AI model is trained on your chats. This includes our provider’s models.
Please do not share private details
Please do not tell Ask Hazel your full name, address or details about a child. Please do not share details about your health or anybody else’s health unless you need to. We remove some details automatically, but not all of them. Whatever you type is saved with the chat. If you are signed in, it is linked to your account.
Postcodes in Ask Hazel
Some answers depend on where you live, such as pay or who to contact. Ask Hazel first gives you a short national answer. Then Ask Hazel asks for your postcode. Ask Hazel uses it to find your local authority and give you a full answer.
You can give your full postcode, or only the first part, called the postcode district. For example, LS6. We save what you give with the chat.
Local answers
Ask Hazel gives local answers for each local authority. It uses public information. It can also use a local knowledge pack that the local authority gives us. We check every pack before Ask Hazel uses it, in the same way as every other source.
A local authority that pays for FosterScope can choose the tone of Ask Hazel’s local answers. It cannot change what Ask Hazel says when someone may be at risk. It cannot change pay or eligibility figures, or what Ask Hazel says about other fostering services.
Reports to local authorities about local questions
Starts later. We will update this notice before it starts.
Local authorities that pay for FosterScope get a monthly report about the questions people near them ask Ask Hazel. The report shows totals. It never shows a chat or anything that names you. It never shows an email address or a postcode. It shows no figure for fewer than 10 people.
Ask Hazel on a local authority’s own website
Starts later, once Ask Hazel meets its quality checks on FosterFolk.
A local authority that pays for FosterScope may put Ask Hazel on its own fostering website. There, Ask Hazel answers only for that local authority.
On that website, the local authority is in charge of your chats. In data protection law, it is the controller. BrightMaker Labs runs Ask Hazel for it as its processor, under a written contract called a data processing agreement. The local authority’s own privacy notice applies.
Chats on a local authority’s website never join a FosterFolk profile. They never feed any FosterScope ranking or score.
If a message suggests someone is at risk
If a message suggests a child or adult is at risk, Ask Hazel does not write its own answer. Ask Hazel shows a fixed message. It tells you who to contact, such as 999, your local authority’s children’s services, or the NSPCC.
No local authority can change this message.
Postcodes in the pay lookup
When you use the pay lookup, we use your postcode to find your local authority and its neighbours. We store the postcode you give: the full postcode, or the postcode district if that is all you give.
If you have a profile, we keep your postcode and local authority on it. We use them to show you local pay, local guides and nearby local authorities. If you agree to hear from local authorities, we also use your area to decide which messages reach you. You can change or remove your postcode in your preference centre.
If you do not have a profile, we store the postcode with your lookup.
Our analytics never record your postcode. They record only the local authority, and only if you agree to analytics.
Emails and texts from FosterFolk
We send launch news and the weekly email only if you ask for them. Each email has an unsubscribe link. One click stops it.
We also send emails you need, such as sign-in links and links to your preference centre. We confirm by email when we delete your profile. These are not marketing.
Our emails come from hazel@fosterfolk.com. We send them through SendGrid, which is part of Twilio. SendGrid acts on our instructions as our processor. See “Who we share your information with”.
If you say yes, we track our marketing emails, such as launch news and the weekly email. A small image tells us when you open one. Links pass through SendGrid so we know which ones you click. We use this to see which emails work and to send you emails that interest you.
Email tracking is a separate choice. It is never ticked for you. You can turn it off at any time in your preference centre or with the link in any marketing email. If you say no, or we have not asked yet, we switch tracking off on every email we send you.
Emails you need never carry tracking, for example a sign-in link.
We send text alerts only if you ask for them and give us your mobile number.
Messages from local authorities near you
You can choose to hear from local authority fostering services near you. This is a separate choice. It is never ticked for you. It is separate from the weekly email.
Here is how it works:
- A local authority writes a message in FosterScope.
- FosterFolk sends it to members who said yes and who match the area and interests the local authority chose.
- The message says clearly which local authority it comes from.
- If you want to reply, you use the local authority’s own form. You decide what to tell them.
The local authority never sees your name, email address, phone number or profile. It sees only totals, such as how many messages we sent. It sees no figure for fewer than 10 people. It learns who you are only if you choose to contact it.
We never use information about your background to choose who receives a message.
“Near you” can include neighbouring local authorities, not only your own. People can foster with a local authority next to theirs.
FosterFolk never sends messages for independent fostering agencies (IFAs).
You can stop these messages with one click in any of them. You can also stop them in your preference centre.
Local authority news and placements on FosterFolk
Starts later. We will update this notice before it starts.
A local authority that pays for FosterScope can post news on its own FosterFolk page. Each item is labelled as coming from that local authority. News on a page is the same for everyone who reads it. We do not use your information to choose it.
Local authorities and fostering hubs that pay for FosterScope can also show messages to FosterFolk readers on FosterFolk itself. We call these placements. Each placement is labelled as coming from that local authority or hub.
We choose who sees a placement by area and by your stage. Your stage might be “thinking about it” or “fostering”. We never use information about your background to choose.
The local authority sees only totals. It sees no figure for fewer than 10 people. It learns who you are only if you choose to enquire with it, on its own form.
Placements never appear in rankings or in Ask Hazel’s answers. Independent fostering agencies cannot buy them.
Advertising FosterFolk
Starts later. We will update this notice, and name the advertising platforms we use, before it starts.
We advertise FosterFolk on other websites and apps. We choose where our adverts show by area, using our heat maps (see “Heat maps”). We also use the interest and job choices the advertising platform offers.
We never give an advertising platform a list of our members. We never upload email addresses or phone numbers to it, even in scrambled (hashed) form. We never ask a platform to find people like our members. These are called lookalike audiences, and we do not use them.
If you say yes to advertising cookies, we tell the platform when you sign up. We also tell it when you add a new level of information to your profile. We send this from our own server. We use it to see which adverts work. If you say no, we tell the platform nothing.
We never put an advertising tag on pages about caring for a child with specific needs. We never put one on pages about ethnicity, religion, health, disability or sexual orientation. We never use information about your background to choose who sees our adverts.
Heat maps
We make maps that show where interest in fostering is, area by area. We call them heat maps. We use them to plan our work and to choose where our adverts show.
Local authorities that pay for FosterScope can see the heat maps for their own area. The maps combine public data with totals from FosterFolk. They never show a person. They show no figure for fewer than 10 people.
Heat maps never rank a local authority. Nothing from them enters any FosterScope ranking or score.
Some layers may come from public information about health, ethnicity or other subjects the law protects most. We use those layers as background only. We never use them to choose who sees an advert or a placement.
Verified foster carers
You can become a verified foster carer in 2 ways.
By invitation from your local authority. Your local authority can invite its foster carers to join FosterFolk. You get a single-use link. If you sign up with the same email address, we mark you as verified for that local authority.
If the local authority uses FosterScope, BrightMaker Labs may send the invitation for it. In that case BrightMaker Labs acts for the local authority only to send the invitation and 1 reminder. Your local authority is in charge of that email list. We do not add those email addresses to FosterFolk. We do not match them against our members. We delete them no later than 90 days after the invitation campaign closes. FosterFolk learns your email address only if you choose to sign up.
By document check. You can send us a document that shows you foster, such as a letter of approval. Please cover everything except your name and your fostering service. A trained moderator checks it. We delete the document once we have checked it, and no later than 30 days after you send it. We keep only the result.
Your badge shows your region by default, not your local authority. This helps protect your household and the children you care for. You can choose to show your local authority.
Once a year we ask you to confirm that you still foster.
A local authority may tell us that a household is no longer approved. If that happens, your badge changes to “former foster carer” until you confirm. We never tell the local authority what you do on FosterFolk.
Telling friends about FosterFolk, and member perks
Referrals
Starts later. We will update this notice before it starts.
We may record that someone joined FosterFolk after you told them about it. We use this to recognise you on FosterFolk. We do not pay for referrals.
Some local authorities run their own schemes that reward people who refer a new foster carer. FosterFolk does not run these schemes. We show what each local authority publishes about its scheme, with the source. The local authority’s own rules and privacy notice apply.
Member perks
Starts later, and not before a legal review that will happen no earlier than July 2027.
Later, we may offer perks to verified foster families. A partner we have checked might give a discount or a free family day out. A perk never depends on any step towards becoming a foster carer, such as an enquiry or approval. No partner may photograph or publicise children in foster care.
Before perks start, we will update this notice. It will say what, if anything, a partner learns about you.
Community posts and reviews
When the community opens, other people can see what you post, with your display name and badge. Before your post goes live, we may suggest changes that remove details that could identify a child.
Foster carers verified to a local authority can review it. Reviews publish without your name. A review shows only once a local authority has enough reviews that nobody can tell who wrote them. The local authority sees only totals. It never sees who wrote what.
We keep records of reports and moderation decisions. We need them to run a safe community and to meet the Online Safety Act 2023.
Why we use your information, and our lawful basis
The law says we need a lawful basis for each use. Where the plan says we ask for consent, we ask for each purpose separately. We record the wording you saw, its version and the time you agreed.

You can ask us how we weighed our legitimate interests against your rights.
You can withdraw consent at any time. Use your preference centre, the link in any email, or contact us. Withdrawing does not affect what we did before.
Nothing on FosterFolk requires you to give us information. If you do not, some features cannot work for you. For example, we cannot show local pay without a postcode.
Profiling and automated decisions
We use your profile and activity to choose which pages, questions and emails to show you. If you agree to email tracking, we also use the emails you open and the links you click. If you agree to hear from local authorities, we use your area and interests to decide which messages reach you. If you agree to placements, we use your area and stage to choose which ones you see. This is profiling. It only happens with your consent.
We make no decisions about you by computer alone that have a legal or similar serious effect on you. Ask Hazel never says whether you would be approved as a foster carer.
How long we keep your information
These are the longest periods we keep each kind of information. We may delete it sooner.
| Information | How long |

Who we share your information with
We never sell your information. We never give a list of our members to anyone. That includes local authorities, IFAs and advertisers.
We use other companies to run FosterFolk. They act on our instructions. They may not use your information for their own purposes. The law calls them processors. We have a contract with each one.
| Processor | What it does | Where it holds data |
|---|---|---|
| Vercel | Hosts the website | The United States. Our pages are served from London |
| Supabase | Hosts our database, including your profile | London (eu-west-2) |
| Anthropic | Writes Ask Hazel answers and checks them, once Ask Hazel opens to the public | The United States |
| SendGrid, part of Twilio | Sends our emails from hazel@fosterfolk.com. Open and click tracking are on only for members who say yes to email tracking. We do not add labels or extra details to emails that would tell SendGrid more about you than your email address. | The United States |
If you say yes to advertising cookies, we also send events to advertising platforms. See “Advertising FosterFolk”.
We may also share information when the law requires it, for example with the police under a court order. We may share it with professional advisers, such as lawyers, under a duty of confidence.
If BrightMaker Labs sells or reorganises the FosterFolk business, your information may pass to the new owner. The new owner must follow this notice.
FosterScope and local authorities: reach, not data
FosterScope is run by BrightMaker Labs, the same company as FosterFolk. Some local authorities pay for FosterScope.
FosterScope lets local authorities reach FosterFolk members who said yes. They can do this by email and on FosterFolk. FosterScope never gives local authorities your name, email address, phone number or profile. Your information stays inside FosterFolk. A local authority sees only totals, such as how many members near it said yes, with no figure for fewer than 10 people.
A local authority that pays for FosterScope may also change how its own FosterFolk page looks, post news on it, and get heat maps and a monthly report of local questions. Every local authority can correct a fact on any page for free. Paying gives a local authority no advantage in any ranking or in what Ask Hazel says. Our “How FosterFolk works” page will explain this when the full site opens.
Nothing from FosterFolk changes any FosterScope ranking or score.
Some links from FosterFolk go to a local authority’s website. These links tell the website that the visit came from FosterFolk. The link does not say who you are. Once you are on that website, its own privacy notice applies.
Transfers outside the UK
Some of our processors are based in the United States or may process data there.
When we transfer data outside the UK, we use a legal safeguard. Some US companies have signed up to the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. For those, we use it. Otherwise we use the UK’s International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum, with a risk assessment.
You can ask us for a copy of the safeguards we use.
How we keep your information safe
We keep member data in FosterFolk’s own database. We do not use an outside customer database. No local authority or other company holds a copy.
Only people who need access get it. The database checks each person’s role before it shows any data. Local authority members of FosterFolk never see any member’s personal information.
If something goes wrong with your data and it puts you at risk, we tell you. We report serious breaches to the ICO within 72 hours.
Your rights
You have these rights over your personal information:
| Right | What it means |
|---|---|
| Access | You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you. |
| Correction | You can ask us to correct it. |
| Deletion | You can ask us to delete it. |
| Restriction | You can ask us to limit how we use it. |
| Objection | You can object when we rely on legitimate interests. You can always object to marketing. |
| Data portability | You can ask for it in a form a computer can read, to move it elsewhere. |
| Withdraw consent | You can withdraw any consent at any time. |
Some rights have limits. If a limit applies, we tell you why.
How to use your rights
Most things you can do yourself, in your preference centre. You can see everything we hold, change it, download it and delete it there.
You can also email us at hello@fosterfolk.com.
We answer within 1 month. If your request is complex, we can take up to 2 more months. We tell you if we need longer and why.
We may ask you to prove who you are. The time limit starts when we have what we need. If we need you to explain your request, we may pause the time limit until you reply.
We search for your information in a reasonable and proportionate way.
Using your rights is free. If a request is clearly unfounded or excessive, we may charge a reasonable fee or refuse. We tell you why.
Your rights cover your Ask Hazel history. If you are signed in, you can see, download and delete your chats in your preference centre. If you were not signed in, we saved your chats without an account, so we cannot easily tell which chats are yours.
If you used Ask Hazel on a local authority’s own website, ask that local authority. It is in charge of those chats.
When you delete your profile, we delete it everywhere we hold it. That includes our processors and your Ask Hazel history. We keep only what we need to show we followed the law. For example, we keep proof that you unsubscribed and records of what you agreed to. We keep these for the periods in “How long we keep your information”.
Children
FosterFolk is for adults. You must be 18 or over to make an account. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18 for a profile.
If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we close it. We delete the profile.
Anyone can use Ask Hazel without an account, so a child might use it. If a child uses Ask Hazel, the same rules apply as for adults who are not signed in. We save the chat without an account, and we remove names and contact details. Ask Hazel does not ask for anyone’s age.
If Ask Hazel sees a sign that a child is at risk, it shows a fixed safety message. It does not write its own answer. The message points to help, such as Childline or the NSPCC.
Complaints
Complaining to us
If you are unhappy with how we use your information, please tell us first. Email hello@fosterfolk.com.
We confirm we have your complaint within 30 days. We look into it. We keep you updated. We tell you the outcome without undue delay.
Complaining to the ICO
You can also complain to the ICO. The ICO is the UK data protection regulator. Since 30 September 2026 its legal name is the Information Commission. It is still called the ICO.
Website: ico.org.uk
The ICO’s contact details are on its website.
Changes to this notice
We update this notice when we change how we use your information. We show the date of each version at the top. If a change matters to you, we tell you by email or on the site before it starts. If a change needs your consent, we ask for it again.
